SHORELINES

Although the ocean itself is very old, shorelines, that are boundaries between land and water, have probably changed location many times. Shoreline locations change as continents rise and fall. Slow, vertical movements of the continents are occurring at present and doubtlessly have occurred during earth’s history.

Changes in the amount of seawater in the ocean would also cause changes in sea level. For example, large and relatively sudden changes in sea level accompany the development and disappearance of large ice sheets on land. The water stored in these continent-sized glaciers comes from the ocean. Consequently sea level falls as glaciers form and rises as they melt.

About 20,000 years ago, large areas of the northern continents were ice-covered and the sea stood about 130 m below its present level. Much of the now submerged continental margin was then dry land. Asia and North America were connected by land. Early man migrated across this bridge from Asia to populate North and South America. Mammoths grazed on the now submerged Atlantic continental margin of North America and rivers out extensive valley systems on these now submerged offshore lands.

When the ice melted, sea level rose, flooding many low-lying river valleys. It is estimated that if all the water remaining in the present Antarctic and Greenland ice sheet were returned to the ocean, sea level would rise about 50 m, flooding large portions of low-lying coastal cities.

Ex.6 Answer the following questions:

1. What do we call “shorelines”? 2. Have shorelines changed location many times? 3. Do shorelines change as continents rise and fall? 4. What kind of movements of the continents are occurring at present? 5. What would changes inthe amount of seawater in the ocean cause? 6. What do large and relatively sudden changes in sea level accompany? 7. Where does the water stored in the large ice sheets on land come from? 8. Why does the sea level fall as glaciers form? 9. Why does the sea level rise as glaciers melt? 10. Did the sea stand at its present level 20,000 years ago? 11. About how many meters below its present level did it then stand? 12. Was most of the now submerged continental margin then dry land? 13. Was there a time when Asia and America were connected ? 14. Did early man migrate across this bridge? 15. What happened when ice melted? 16. what would happen if all the water remaining in the present Antarctic and Greenland ice sheet were returned to the ocean?

Ex.9 Study the text for about 10 minutes in class and then retell it:

The Atlantic Ocean lies like a broad S between North America and Europe and South America and Africa. It is over 36 million square miles ( including the Arctic Ocean ) and at its widest point, between La Plata River in South America and Africa, is about 3,700 nautical miles. ( A nautical mile is about 1,856 meters). The Pacific Ocean covers more of the globe than do all the continents of the world combined. This ocean was named Pacific, meaning peaceful, by the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan in 1519. He called the waters “ Pacific” because they seemed so smooth compared to the rough Atlantic.
